Keeping Scooter's vibrant spirit alive, raising awareness of the toll gun violence inflicts, Promoting peaceful conflict resolution, and inspiring change among our community's youth.

What began as tragedy has become a source of hope and inspiration to Milwaukee youth...through efforts of The Scooter Foundation.

With a mission of Making Memories Matter, the foundation is a living remembrance of Scott "Scooter" Schmidt, a victim of gun violence in May, 2005. Scooter was known in the Water Street community and beyond for his kind heart and generosity toward others. The Scooter Foundation was formed to keep Scooter's vibrant spirit alive, to raise awareness of the toll gun violence inflicts, and to inspire change among our community's youth.

Volunteer Coordinator :

Nalissa Wienke

Hi all! The Scooter Foundation has been busy this year! We had more than 40 eligible students last month for the rollerskating outing, WOW! Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who came and helped make it a successful outing. The kids worked extremely hard to deserve a wonderful day - and each of you helped make that possible. Thank you so much for your dedication to the foundation and encouraging Milwaukee's young students.

Volunteers, tutors and mentors are always welcomed.

Let Nalissa know how you can help.

We have many children on outings, and need volunteers to ensure a smooth and safe outing!

An Old Friend is Moving On

Mr. Steve Rogers, long time custodian and good friend of Oliver Wendell Holmes School and the Scooter Foundation has taken a new postion as Head Engineer at Rufus King. We wish him well and want to thank him for his great help in organizing and running many events held at the school on behalf of the Scooter Foundation.

Christmas Tree at Catherdral Square!

Last November 12th, at Cathedral Square Park, students from Oliver Wendell Holmes School decorated an ornament and wrote on it "I Dream of a World" followed by their own personal message. Our Christmas Tree was on display throughout the holiday season! It sure was beautiful!

May 31st, 2011 Garden of Hope
AWE Dedication

On May 25th, we celebrated the installation of the garden sculpture at Scooters Garden of Hope, across the Street from Oliver Wendell Holmes School. The Scooter Foundation sponsored an incredible art project with AWE (Artists Working in Education) the art teacher and the students at OW Holmes.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon volunteers, kids and guests were able to examine the artwork. We heard from the artists and students themselves, and Dr. Gregory Thornton, Superintendent of MPS, took the time from his busy schedule to address the crowd, acknowledge the accomplishment, and put out his vision for MPS's educational future.

... and, we had cake! Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

To see all of the images of the event, please click here!

For decades, Mr. EB Garner and his fishing program at Washington Park has given us all the know-how to be successful!

But, time and heavy use have taken a toll on his equipment

Being a very good friend and partner of the Scooter Foundation, we wanted to do our part. We are donating some of our funds to help purchase 25 new fishing poles!

... and we couldn't be happier or more proud to do so.

His Annual Event is this next June 24th.

Thanks Mr. Garner!

Our April spring cleaning in "Scooters Garden of Hope" was a tremendous success.. Many thanks to all of the volunteers, and students that spent their day getting their hands dirty in our garden...

The students at OW Holmes elementary school have been growing ten different types of fruit and veggie's in their class rooms... We did add a really cool vertical potato basket that should yield about 40 pounds of potatoes this fall... The picnic tables got a fresh coat of paint, all of the beds are weed free and mulched, bird bath has been repaired, the beds across the street at the school were all weeded out, the bench's got a fresh coat of poly finish, berry patch all cleaned up and mulched...

All in all very productive day... The sun was out and we had a lovely lunch (thanks lunch lady Teri)...

May is going to be wonderful as we are taking the students on a boat ride and the Milwaukee Firefighters will be joining us for lunch with the fire boat at Pere Marquette park..

What I really can't wait for is the construction of our new Garden Shed... This will happen on May 20th along with some planting and garden activities... So thanks to all that made our garden possible... Bliffert lumber continues to support the garden for the 3rd year in a row... So please show them your support...

Happy Gardening to all....
